Shootout at Lokhandwala

Shootout at Lokhandwala is a 2007 Hindi feature film directed by Apoorva Lakhia. It is based upon the real-life gunbattle between gangsters and Mumbai Police.

Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Aftab Ahmed Khan Head of the ATS attacked the Lokhandwala Complex on November 16, 1991 , with a force of around 100 armed Policemen. Dreaded gangster Maya Dolas was hiding in the complex. The leading protagonists in the film have slightly different names than their real-life counterparts and the film caption is "based on true rumours." The film was released on May 25, 2007.

Plot

The film opens with shots of brooms and dustpans cleaning dried blood and bullet casings in and around Swati building at Lokhandwala Complex[1]. TVN reporter Meeta Matu (Diya Mirza) reports that some 3000 rounds of ammunition were discharged by a large Police squad at a previously peaceful residential locality.

The film moves to the offices of former chief justice turned private prosecutor Dhingra (Amitabh Bachchan) where he interviews the three leading members of the Mumbai Police Encounter Squad , Assistant Commissioner of Police Shamsher Khan (referring to A A Khan, played by Sanjay Dutt), Inspector Kaviraj Patil (Sunil Shetty) and Sub-Inspector Javed Sheikh (Arbaaz Khan). The main film timeline is the extended interview of the three officers by Dhingra; as the officers answer Dhingra's questions, the film flashes back to show the incidents.

Dhingra asks about the Encounter Squad. Khan explains that he hand-picked 27 of Mumbai Police's best enlisted men and officers. He borrowed the concept from the LAPD SWAT Special Weapons And Tactics team to help combat crime in the city. The film flashes back to show Khan selecting his men and putting them through intensive physical and mental training to be "fast, efficient and deadly". Dhingra is hardly impressed: he points out that if Khan chooses to "shoot to kill" then Khan is no different from the gangsters he seeks to destroy.

Dhingra asks why Khan felt he had do this. Khan explains that following Operation Bluestar in 1984, several Sikh terrorists fled to Mumbai and began establishing a base in the city. They engaged in violence, extortion and other subversive tactics to grow their operations. The film flashes back to show Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Abhishek Mhatre (Abhishek Bachchan) , a very brave officer and disciple of Khan , pursuing and subsequently getting shot down by a group of Sikh terrorists. Khan is deeply frustrated when the Mumbai Police, mired in internal bureaucracy and corruption, fails to act. He obtains clearance from the police commissioner Krishnamurthy (played by the real A A Khan) and sets out after the militants. Khan asks Meeta Matu (Diya Mirza) to cover the incident so as to deter future terrorists. True to Khan's words, he successfully "encounters" (a practice mistakenly considered unique to Indian Police; it indicates summarily gunning down criminals; 'extra judicial killings' is the term accepted internationally) the terrorists who had shot PSI Mhatre. As per Aftab Ahmed Khan the encounter with Khalistani Extremist was more dangerous and tough than Shootout at Lokhandwala.

Omkara

Dolly’s father Advocate Ragunath Mishra (Kamal Tiwari), mostly referred in the movie as “vakeel saab” (lawyer sir), is furious and confronts Omi. He puts a gun to Omi’s head and demands the return of his daughter. Bhaisaab intervenes and resolves the conflict by mentioning the current political conditions and prevents bloodshed. Still unconvinced, Vakeel saab grieves to Bhaisaab the next day. To bring a final solution to this issue, Dolly is made to appear in front of her father and clarify that she eloped with Omi rather than being abducted forcefully. She also tells the events of how she fell in love with Omkara. The father leaves feeling betrayed and ashamed.

After some crafty political arm-twisting, involving a MMS sex scandal, Omkara eliminates a powerful electoral rival. Bhaisaab is elected for Parliament and Omkara is promoted from “bahubali” to the candidate for the upcoming state elections. Omkara appoints Kesu over Langda as his successor once he enters politics himself. Langda, disappointed with Omkara's poor judgment and jealous of Kesu, his younger, less-experienced, superior; hatches a plot to revenge both his offenders. He first causes a violent brawl between Kesu and Rajju (Deepak Dobriyal), Dolly’s original suitor by taking advantage of Kesu's low threshold for alcohol. Such irresponsible behaviour of Kesu infuriates Omi, who now starts becoming unsure about his own decision.

He meets three girls at different stages of his life: Mahi (Minissha Lamba) - a small-town girl from Punjab, Radhika (Bipasha Basu) - a model from Mumbai and Gayatri (Deepika Padukone) - an NRI taxidriver from Australia. The film is about a boy who goes from one love affair to another, only to run into true love.

In 1996, Raj runs into Mahi on the Eurorail, during a Europe trip. However, Mahi misses her train and is stranded in Switzerland without any money. Raj finds her, consoles her and offers to help her reach the airport in time for her return flight. On the way, Mahi falls in love with Raj. They share a kiss after Raj reads her a poem he had written about his feelings for her. They have fun together and when Raj drops Mahi at the airport, Mahi opens the page on which Raj had written the poem, only to find it blank. Then she overhears him boasting to his friends about how he had a good time. She is shocked. But when Raj realizes that he has been caught, he is unable to decide what to do and simply leaves, leaving the crying Mahi behind.

It is 2002. Raj has since moved to Mumbai and found a job with Microsoft as a game designer. He is also in a live-in relationship with Radhika - a successful model. Soon Raj receives transfer orders to Sydney after his success with the Halo 3 launch (apparently developed primarily owing to his effort). He expects to be able to leave Radhika and move on to a new life. However, Radhika unexpectedly announces that she intends to sacrifice her career as a model, marry Raj and join him in Australia - much to Raj's dismay. After failing on several occasions to force her to break up, he stands her up on their wedding day and gets on a flight to Sydney.

It's 2007. Raj is now in midst of a successful career in Sydney. One day he runs into Gayatri, who drives taxi during the evenings and studies at a business school during the day. She also works in a super-market as the cashier. Raj befriends her and learns that, like him, she does not believe in the institution of marriage. However, he realizes that he is falling in love with her and finally proposes. But Gayatri turns him down and walks away. Raj is deeply hurt and remembers Mahi and Radhika. He decides to return to India to apologize to both of them for the hurt he has caused.

On his return, he first seeks out Mahi. She is now married and has two sons. He runs into her husband (played by Kunal Kapoor) who expresses his anger at first. He tells Raj that Preeti (Mahi's Sister) has told him everything but remains hurt to date. He also tell Raj how she continues to be the perfect housewife and mother of his children, but when it comes to love - she turns away and makes excuses. Raj decides to intervene and finally apologizes to Mahi. He also makes her realize how much her husband loves her. She forgives Raj and expresses her love for her husband.

Having received closure with Mahi, Raj now seeks out Radhika. He finally finds her only to realize that she has now changed her name to Shreya Rathod and has become a Super model. After much effort, he manages to meet her and offers his apologies. Shreya refuses to accept his apologies and tells him that he needs to work hard in order to earn it. To do this she offers him the job of an assistant. Once Raj starts his job, Shreya drives him hard making him do all sorts of tasks - from cleaning to serving at parties. She tries to humiliate him at every possible occasion. But Raj remains firm on his resolve and continues to serve without complaint. Finally she gives up and tells him how hurt she felt sitting alone outside the registrars office. She refuses to accept his apologies, forcing Raj to give up and return home. But while waiting for his flight, Shreya catches up with him and tells him how she has realized that the root of her frustrations was all the bottled up hate against Raj. So in an effort to gain closure, she has thought over her decision again and has decided to grant Raj a full pardon. Raj is thrilled and returns to Australia.

On his return, Raj finds several letters from Gayatri. While he has been away, Gayatri has had second thoughts and has regretted having turned down Raj. The film ends with Raj seeking her out and unites with Gayatri.

Race-Betrayal, Greed and Revenge

movie raceRace directed by thriller king Abbas-Mustan is a fast paced action thriller. Abbas-Mustan are known for films like Khiladi (Akshay Kumar), Baazigar (Shahrukh Khan), Humrazz (Akshaye Khanna). In Race they are back with a powerful star cast - Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy. In this movie Abbas-Mustan attempted to include full masala like glamour, mind blowing set and cinematography, gorgeous cast breath taking numbers. The fast cars, horse racing and the exotic location of South Africa add value to the film.

The Story

Race is a slick but a complicated thriller in which everyone in the film double crosses the others. It is a film about two step brothers Ranvir Sing(Saif) and alcoholic younger brother Rajeev Sing (Akshaye). These two brothers compete against each other since childhood. Ranvir is always hungry for the success. On the other hand Rajeev is laidback and loves wine more than the family horses. Their life revolves around horse racing from owning a stud firm in Durban South Africa to betting huge amount money on them. movie raceEach one (Brothers) have an insurance policy of $100 million to their name. Sonia (Bipasha), a beautiful upcoming ramp model is Ranvir's lady. Sofia (Katrina) plays Ranvir's Private Secretary. She has a crush on Ranvir but never reciprocate it.

The climax has started when Rajeev falls for Sonia and married her. But evil plans are taking shape in the minds of the protagonist one of the two brothers will die and the other will inherit the huge amount of insurance claim. The murder takes place. Detective Robert D'Costa (Anil Kapoor) and his foolish secretary Mini (Sameera Reddy) try to solve the murder. But the story has not ended. The another brother who is alive hold of the money. Directors Abbas-Mustan throws on a couple of more twist.

Performances

Nowadays Saif is playing many experimental role like Omkara and earlier Dil Chahta Hai and Ek Hasina Thi. In this movie he played very powerful performances. In some action sequence he perform creditably and beared looked made him stunning.

Akshaye Khanna stands out for his role. He is superb.

Bipasha Basu is as glamorous as ever and played her role to her limited best but some action scene she was really praiseworthy.

Katrina Kaif looks beautifumovie racel but did not do much except for looking good.

Anil Kapoor provides much required comic relief in the second half of the movie. He played his part well.

Sameera Reddy was dumb and poorly performed.

Johny Lever was there only for one sequence but he was quite spontaneous with his joke. He required more presence.

Directors

Directors Abbas-Mustan deserves credit for their execution. This time Abbas-Mustan has done number of experiments with the mystery, suspense just to hold the audience attention throughout the movie and they succeed. But Race seems to be way too complicated although the attempt made by them was sincere.

Others

Two more driving elements in the film that is the Pritam's music which is loud, rocking and suit the mood of the film and very well picturized especiamovie racelly Atif Aslam's "Pehli Nazar Mein". The background music is also thrilling. Another element is stunt sequences directed by Allan Amin, which really matches the title of the movie especially Saif's fall, car racing etc. He is just terrific. Writer Shiraz Ahmed's screenplay has several moments that prove his merit. The best part is, the writing is full of liveliness and surprises. One of the hall marks is that every character is out to double cross the other, each character has grey shades and the dangerous games they treat in make it an exciting cinematic experience. Ravi Yadav's cinematography is top-quality. The dazzling locales of Durban, Dubai and Mumbai are captured audience attention. Camera Work is stunning specially the car chase in the climax (never seen before on the Hindi Screen). Dialogues (Anuraag Prapanna, Jitendra Parmar) are superb. Choreography (Bosco-Caesar and Ganesh Acharya) has international aroma. Styling (Anaita Shorff Adajani) is smart and sexy; she was also the costume designer of Dhoom-2

Race Verdict

Very twisted story plot. There is a ups and downs in every twenty minutes made the movie complicated. It is impossible to guess what the culmination would be. It would be much better if Abbas-Mustan concentrate on more simplicity like previous block buster - Baazigar rather than complicacy. But they have proved that they are the master of the thriller movie. After the blockbuster of Khiladi and Bazzigar, Race might just add to their list of hits.

Overall race is seems to be misled but fast moving complicated thriller entertainer.

Jodha Akbar

Jodha Akbar (A Tale of eternal love )

Jodha AkbarJodha Akbar directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar the man behind the Oscar nominated Lagaan. It is a historical love story featuring superstars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who played the movie as Akbar and Jodha. Jodha Akbar is a marvelously spiced-up slice of history. Or just savor the chemistry between the warrior and the princess with hundreds of junior artist, elephants, rabbit and parrots by the couple's journey from secularism to eternity. The best part of the movie is that it blends the love story perfectly with in the war ridden backdrop.

Historical Accuracy

Over the last few weeks, media have been busy with debate over the relationship between Jodha and Akbar. Certain Rajput groups claimed Jodha was married Akbar's son Jahangir, not Akbar. Of course Ashutosh Gowarikar has admitted that, about 60% of the movie is based on his imagination. While making the movie he did his best to go by the book and consulted with best historians and went through meticulous research. Infect there is a disclaims about the Rajput queen's name at the beginning of the film.

Theme

Jodha Akbar is a sixteenth century love story about a marriage of alliances that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal emperor, Akbar and a Rajput princes Jodhaa. Jodha (Aishwariya) daughter of King Bharmal of Amer (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), is married Akbar (Hrithik) just for the political reason. Akbar married her just for the sake of better relationship with Rajputani alliance. It is not the marriage between the King and the Queen, but was marriage between two cultures. At the wedding night Jodha declines to give conjugal rights to him until she finds herself attach to him and Akbar's biggest challenge now did not merely lie in winning battles but in winning the love of this insolent princess.

Performances

Hrithik played Akbar with effortless ease and totally gets into the character. A mind blowing performance without doubt. In some sequences Hrithik was superb like the sword fight in the climax and tempted a wild elephant.

Aishwarya Rai was equally amazing. In some sequence she did very well like the sword fight with Hrithik. Just say only one complement a flow less performance by both star. Beside this, Sonu Sood did complete justice to his role and Ila Arun did her level best. Nikitin Dheer was fantastic and Kulbhushan Kharbanda was perfect.

The Man behind the Camera

Ashutosh Gowarikar has to be congratulated for making a film with such confidence and executing his story on such a grand platform. The sequence of events, the drama, the romance and the war presented on the screen superbly. Though it is a long historical movie (3.20 hours). But Ashutosh Gowarikar presented it in a simple manner. The appearance of Jodha Akbar love was really impressive and he made the legendary characters come alive on screen.

Other phenomenon

A.R. Rahman's music is breath taking. It matches beautifully with the mood of the film. Especially Azeem-o-Shahenshah and romantic song Jashn-e-bahara tunes were fabulous. There is no room for monotonous in Haider Ali and Gowariker's screenplay. The writing is tight, the drama keeps the audience interest and tracks are mind blowing. K.P Saxena's dialogues were astonishing. The war and action scenes were an integral part of the entire drama. Action Director Ravi Dewan's contribution was unbelievable whether it was war sequence or sword fights. Costumes are designed by the top designer in India. Neeta Lulla who was design the Aishwarya Rai's real wedding dress also the costume and jewelry designer of this movie and deserve special mention. Cinematography by Kiran Deohans' matches international standard. The movement of Camera specially in the battlefield portrayed wonderfully.

Another hallmark of this movie is the language used. Both Urdu and Hindi are used nicely especially in the political sequences.

Taare Zameen Par

Taare Zameen Par Star Comes Down to the Ground is a heart touching film prudently made for people of all walks of lives. The movie gained harmony of heart by connecting each and every body of a family. I am confident, the film must be achieved commercial success as well as it will receive enormous praise. Definitely, Amir Khan with his debut gains massive scores as a genius director.

Famous actor Amir, is not the star in the movie, delight and cheerful eight years old Darsheel Safary, who loves colours, fish, shiny things, dogs, spaceships and kites and plays the vital role of Ishaan Awasti, is the glorious star of the film.

Ishaan, a deprived minor, who sees a different world, always getting into fights and always faring badly in school, while his elder brother is a bright student, Ishaan has spent two years in the third standard.

As a punishment, the frustrated father packs him off to a boarding school where he continuously struggling with studies along with heart rendering separation. Unable to deal with the running situation, Ishaan goes into a shell at his new school, not only failing to show any improvement in his academics, but also no longer inspired to paint. The truth came to the light when a teacher identifies him as a dyslexic. Ishaan as a dyslexic has a learning disorder marked by impairment of the ability to recognise and comprehend written words. But his internal world is rich with wonders that no one else seems to appreciate, magical lands filled with color and animated animals.

The situation turned turtle when a new temporary art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Amir Khan) joins the and becomes popular among the students. He begins to notice that Ishaan is unhappy and a non-contributor to activities in the class and begins to review Ishaan's past work and discovers that all of his ‘failures' are actually reflects dyslexia.

The teacher visits Ishaan's parents and asks to review more of his work during his day off. He is also stunned by the sophistication of Ishaan's paintings. Nikumbh tells Ishaan's parents that Ishaan is a bright child who processes information differently than the other children in class. He describes dyslexia to them and clarifies that this is a neurological condition which is not a sign of low intelligence. He also tells them he can provide extra tutoring which will help Ishaan succeed. To support this argument, Nikumbh highlights Ishaan's artistic ability as demonstrated by his many paintings and creative works-of-art.

But his parents dint agreed with him and rebuke for his interest.

After returns to the school, Nikumbh brings up the topic of dyslexia one day in class and offers a list of famous people who are considered dyslexic: Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Walt Disney, Agatha Christie, Thomas Edison, Pablo Picasso, and actor Abhishek Bachchan. As the students are leaving the classroom Nikumbh asks Ishaan to stay back.

Afterwards, Nikumbh reveals that he has experienced the same difficulties with dyslexia.

Next, Nikumbh conveys the same information to the principal of the school and asks if he can act as a tutor for Ishaan. After gaining the Principal's assent, Nikumbh takes it upon himself to develop and improve Ishaan's reading and writing abilities.

Nikumbh then proceeds to teach Ishaan using remedial techniques developed by specialists in the area of dyslexia. Ishaan soon develops interest in language and mathematical skills and his grades improve.

Soon after, the teacher organises an art competition for staffs and students.Ishaan, with his strikingly creative style is declared the winner, while his teacher, Nikumbh (who paints Ishaan's portrait) is declared the runner up.

The parents become, speechless to see the changes of Ishaan as he has improved in all of his subjects and has a commendable grade in painting. His father breaks int tears upon seeing this change and realizes his past mistakes. Before leaving for the holidays, Ishaan runs to hug his teacher who jubilantly tosses him in the air.

Darsheel Safary, for an eight-year-old gives off an excellent performance worthy of a standing ovation. This is one bright lad who has understood the character very well. Everything about Ishaan is perfect, from his body language, to the way he delivers his dialogues to the expression in his eyes which shouts for help.

Amir brings a turn-a-round in Ishaan giving an example of Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Alva Edision, all great men, who suffered from the same malaise, the way is heartening.

The scene where Amir visits Ishaan's house and forces his father Nandakishore Awasti (Vipin Sharma) to read letters written in Chinese on a toy box, ridiculing him when he can't, is a clincher! Also, when the father visits his boy in school and sees the improvement and learns that he is at fault is gripping. He runs away as he can't face his child. The scene where Ishaan wins the drawing competition and where he reluctantly comes ahead to receive his prize in front of the whole school will leave you moist-eyed.

The background score and music by Shankar Eshan Loy and Shailendra Barve is excellent. The lyrics, which go, "Aap ko malum hai na Maa...." is heart-rendering.

The bonding between Yohan Awasti (Sachet Engineer) with his younger brother has been captured well by the director he also extracted excellent performances from these two kids showing friendship between Ishaan and Rajan Damodaran (Tanay Chheda). Tisca Chopra as Ishaan's mother is a revelation, so also is Vipin Sharma. He portrays the behaviour every working father wears on his sleeve.

All the parents who are always in competition looking for a winner should aware seeing the film and all teachers should teach their students just a funny way.

Taare Zameen Par is not just a movie it is a fabulous creation of a creator to opening our eyesight regarding the children.

Jannat

Jannat movie reviewJannat is the film that shows a man taking up shortcuts of evil means to get his "Jannat" (heaven) on the earth. The theme of the movie is clear-- there is only entry into the crimes, but no exit. The film is made in the line of gambling and match-fixing while the prime theme of the film is love.

Emran Hashmi and Mukesh Bhatt combination always demonstrated the darker episode of life in their movies. All the previous movies (Murder, Gangster and others) had a negative touch. In Jannat except the name itself the movie holds the like subjects.

Produced by Vishesh Films, ‘Jannat' was the debut of Kunal Deshmukh as director and also Vishesh Bhatt as a screenplay writer in the movie. The heroine Zoya (Sonal Chauhan) also marks her debut through the movie. Arjun (Emraan Hashmi) and Zoya (Sonal Chauhan) are the two central characters of the movie where Arjun is highly ambitious in life to make huge money as well as wining the heart of his love, Zoya.

Story synopsis

Ambitious Arjun is reluctant to make money through hard labour. He always aims big and for the time being makes his living paying card. Life goes on like that way until he meets the cute Zoya (Sonal Chauhan) through a chance accident at a shopping mall. Since then his lone aim is to be rich at any cost to come out of his ordinary life. Soon he steps up into the world of match-fixing shifting to his base to South Africa and subsequently became a bookie.

By dint of his sharp intelligence Arjun could bet on the best and earns easy money through his illegal means. At the same time he becomes associated to a bookie mafia led by don Abu who heads a criminal group based in South Africa. However, his quick growth in the betting world attracts the attention of the police. But Arjun always escapes getting caught despite doing unlawful things.

On the other hand Zoya is confident that she got a right person for herself whereas her father smells Arjun to be into a wrong business. One day Zoya also figures out that Arjun is into the wrong world and efforts to assist Arjun out of the underworld with the help of ACP Malhotra. After being imprisoned, he decides to give up his bad ways and work hard to keep his love.At that time, the underworld don (Javed Sheikh) offers Arjun with unlimited money and Arjun gets confused to choose between the two---the love of his life and his newly got success and power. The story goes on with the revealing climax and ends up ruin of Arjun.

Presentation

The performance of Emraan Hashmi is amazing. Instead of being a lusty playboy like his all other movies Emran appears as an actor in the movie. Debutant Sonal Chauhan also did well. Sonal Chauhan showed some trouble at the beginning but later on she performed well. Javed Sheikh came up with a stunner and Sameer Kochhar did his role with perfection.

Jawed Sheikh is luminous. This is his finest work so far. Samir Kochar is outstanding. Vishal Malhotra is first-rate. Shakeel Khan does very well. Abhimanyu Singh is talented. Vipin Sharma leaves a mark in a brief role. The others were above average.

Manoj Soni's cinematography is well. The screenplay and costume department look good. Sanjay Masoom's dialogues are good. A few dialogues in fact, are refreshing to the ears. Background score [Raju Singh] deserves top marks.

Direction & script

Both debutants-- the director and the script writer-- have shown outstanding potential with the story idea of Jannat. The movie highlights more on the love with the cricket. Although the first half appears in a slow mode but things gets momentum just before intermission and the second half goes on with full of climax.

The debutant director's bold attempt at a new subject was seen in the presentation and the clearness was visible in the narration. Some background score coupled with some really luminous camerawork has backed him a lot in the movie. The editing and the script were also good.

Music

Pritam is the music composer of the Mukesh Bhatt movie Jannat. The lyrics of the songs have been written by Sayeed Quadri. ‘Zara Sa' -KK sings this lovely romantic song. This one successfully marks a good start for the album Jannat. ‘Zara Sa' (Club Mix) is fast and brilliant in KK voice.

Based on 80's hit Kamran Ahmed has written the lyrics for the song ‘Judai' and he also gave his voice with Richa Sharma. The difference comes with the new beats in the Judai. ‘Judai' ‘Kilogram Mix'- gets heavy in beats. Richa Sharma solely sings the song ‘Lambi Judai' faultlessly. ‘Haan Tu' with tabla beats and Pakistani sufi pop kind is good to listen. Rana Mazumdar sings the good fresh love song ‘Door Naa Ja'. The title song ‘Jannat Jahan' is a rock song by Rupam Islam and lyrics by Neelesh Mishra. The energy in the song is stormy and the rocks go well with the theme song. Overall the music of Jannat under the composition of Pritam is great!

Final remarks

The movie is overall good and enjoyable. The betting world is shown well. The movie rightly conveyed the message that the money involved in the real world is way beyond the imagination. It works fine but sometimes gets impractical. After all it is a good movie which takes up a different subject and gives it a due treatment.

Lastly, music of Jannat is awesome!

Sarkar Raj

sarkar rajRenowned Indian film director Ram Gopal Varma retrieved his glorious kingdom of talent, creativity and achievements giving the taste of true Indian Cinema through his recent movie Sarkar Raj. Starring indian film icons Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the film was premiered at International Indian Film Awards (IIFA) 2008 in Bangkok on June, 6, creating a global audience.

Sarkar Raj is based on a strong political performance of treachery, revenge, passion, courage, love or relationships and is to all intents and purposes a study of power; it explores the politics of development and takes a fresh look at the tradition versus modernity dispute.

Legend actor Amitabh played the vital role as (Shubash Sarkar Nagre) in the first half of the movie while his son Abhishek attracted the audience performing his brilliant performance rest of the time.

The story of the movie revealed that Anita Ranjan (Aishwarya Rai) Chief Executive Officer of the International Company, Sheppard Power Plant proposes a power plant project, which is to be setup in rural Maharastra at a land owned by Sarkar.

Sarkar disapproves the projects as the land chosen is home to over 40,000 villagers, including the residence of Sarkar's mentor Rao Saab. Shankar Nagre (Abhishek Bachchan) son of Sarkar Nagre is quick to realise all the benefits the power plant can bring to the people of Maharastra and to the growth of the state.

After convincing his father Sarkar and asking Rao Saab, Anita and Shanker get sanctioned for the project. Shankar undertakes a journey along with Anita to the villages of Maharashtra to mobilize support from the villagers.

The dream however, faded as things are not what they seem to be and Shankar's dream project gradually becomes a political minefield and transforms into a political battle field of power and corruption.

Sarkar's enemies, two political leaders, Hassan Qazi and deputy Chief Minister Kanga, who make plans to get rid of Sarkar through power plant gang up to bring down the Sarkar legacy and displace Shankar. He has taken power over inherited.

A political character Sanjay Somji who matches real life Raj Thackeray (...in looks) is expert at provoking villagers against the project and one day the political rivalry leads to explosion in Shankar's car leaving his kid expecting wife kill.

Repeated disfavour incidents causing a heart attack of Sarkar and he admit to a hospital where he has meeting with the newsmen.

On the other hand, Anita falls in love with already married Shankar and she later faces Shankar's wife over the accusation of her alleged relation with Shankar.

Varma again proves his eligibility sketching a true political drama of India. The movie is blown up with excellent performance by legend Amitabh Bachchan, expectedly, comes up with a terrific performance. The super star as ferocious as a wounded tiger in the climax and takes the film to towering stage.

His son Abhishek Bachchan is cast opposite the finest actor of this country, yet he sparkles in every sequence as the father and son go neck to neck as far as acting honours go.

Aishwarya is fabulous and delivers her career-best performance spreading her looks, but not much space has been devoted to her performances. But she got better day by day.

The other sidekicks and usual henchmen Dilip Prabhawalkar, Govind Namdev, Sayaji Shinde, Ravi Kale, Supriya Pathak and Tanisha in the story add a degree of realism, comedy and depth to the movie which makes it an attention-grabbing creation of the creator.

The actor enacting the role of Dilip Prabhawalkar's grandson makes a tremendous impact.

The background sounds ‘Govinda ...Govinda' in the film definitely inspiration of arts. Time to time many twists and turns the story gets to the climax enlightening the actual plot behind all the performance.

The screenplay by Prashant Pandey's is appealing; background by Amar Mohile's is brilliant; Amit Roy's cinematography is outstanding and remarkable.

Sarkar Raj has been mostly shot in Indian village based of locations. The close-up shots, in abundance throughout the movie, have been captured and performed well. The editing is crisp and luminous. Allan Amin, as action director in minimal doses, is perfect. Music is average and acceptable.

In conclusion, the audience, who were disappointed enjoying the last attempt of Ram Gopal Varma, will regain their confidence on him as he has tried his best to make up with his mistakes in previous films and done justice to a sequel of a good movie Sarkar Raj.

Raafia Sultana Shoma

Jaane Tu...ya jaane na

Jaane Tu...ya jaane na movieJaane Tu...ya janee na by Abbas Tyrewala, like most of the films of Bollywood, is about love. It has no grand cast, great production standards or extraordinary storyline otherwise the humor, which makes it a fresh entertainer. Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia) are two amongst a group of college friends, who loves each other but don't have the insight or maturity to accept it.

They are especially close, to the extent that, everyone (friends of course, including their parents also) believes they were a couple. While Jai is fairly the most peaceful person, Aditi is somewhat violent and extremely passionate. Their affection and understanding, and overall their complimentary nature makes everyone consider them perfect for both, but the pair don't feel that way. So w hen will they know its love?

After their graduation, Aditi's parents call Jai home to confer about their marriage. To their utmost astonishment and annoyance, both of them reject this notion of their relationship. In terms of her life mate, Aditi prefers a macho man, who will jump into fights to defend her from any insult. Eventually Jai finds a girl (Meghna) at a cluJaane Tu...ya jaane na movieb and saving her from two abusers by amusingly fooling them rather than fighting, makes him way to be closer. As Jai and Meghna begin dating, Aditi finds herself missing Jai's company all the time more, yet tries to ignore her hidden feelings for him. In due course, Aditi starts meeting a family friend, Sushant, who completely fits her conception of perfect man. Aditi's declaration of her engagement makes Jai overcome with jealousy, showing clearly to both of Jai and Meghna his real feelings for Aditi. Consequently they broke -up and in the meantime Aditi also realizes the danger of having a quick-tempered strong man. And its by now they knew that it was love.

Aditi's confession to Sushant makes their relationship also to come to an end, with Sushant's aggressive attack. Finding nothing to stay for, Aditi was leaving for US to pursue a film-making course. And on average to Bollywood tradition, things comes to its wild turn-Jai hits Sushant for striking Aditi, goes to jail, there his newly discovered royal cousins helps to come out and make way to the airport and perceivably, very dramatically he stops Aditi declaring his feelings. Beginning and ending as well at the airport, this film is tremendously simple and uncomplicated and dearly loved by its target audience-the youth.

Music review

The music composed by A. R. Rahman, is one of the remarkably good things of this film. It reflects the essence/spirit of the film-youthful, refreshing and very simple. The two tracts - "kabhi kabhi Aditi" and "Pappu can't dance" become immediate hits for its brilliant lyrics, outstanding composition and most importantly, as it speaks the language of youth.

The Performances/characters

What really works for Jaane Tu...ya janee na is many well-fixed characters, including the supporting ones, performed luminously by the actors. Coming to performances, Imran Khan's boyish appeal is perhaps genetics and part guidance, as he reminds a lot of his uncle but have an impact of his individuality as well. He is very well as a first-timer with his restrained performances and screen presence. Genelia adds novelty to the film with her freshness in look and spontaneity in expressions. But at times, you will really desire she may have delivered better. Jai's mother Savitri (played by Ratna Pathak Shah) and Nasseruddin Shah as his father, conversing from a portrait, is simply marvelous. Personally, I appreciate the performance of Pratiek Babbar in a rather unconventional role; he was very natural as Aditi's complex but talented brother. Paresh Rawal, as usual is wonderful in his short comic role. Only Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan are annoying, mainly because they hardly have a role to play. Overall, the director for his debut was fairly well.

Humor

With everything traditional and simple, the film is basically saved by its comic elements and music. It may be said that if you cut it off from its humor, you will part it from its soul as well. Hilarious scenes abounds in the first half-like, Aditi's parents discussions with Jai on their engagement, the delightful arguments between Jai's mother and his dead father, Jai's fooling Meghna's abusers; leaves you laughing or smile at least. The characters though comically inflated, are believable anyway.

Though most of the portion of Jaane Tu...ya jaane na have been executed by the director brilliantly, but there lies a kind of inconstancy and lengthiness, especially in the second half of the film. And the first 20min is irritating with very unprofessional acting and erratic editing. Again, the climax, the movie would have ended somewhat differently than in an airport, as we are seeing such filmy endings film after film.

Despite all the shortcomings, the treatment of the subject makes this film different, as it is fresh and creative. On the whole, it is enormously enjoyable and a lofty amusement. The viewers revive their past cheerful college time, when friends were the be-all and end-all of life. Already a Box Office hit, this film is a great success of the year.

Singh is King

movie review Singh is KingEven the rhythm in the title - sing(h) is king - gives the impression that it won't be taxing your grey matter to take a laughter-spree ride. Singh is King is a typical bolly-comic film stuffed purely with guffaw and entertainment. The director Anees Bazmee has hit the box office for years with laughter-laden movies like No Entry and Welcome and his latest immensely-mass-catering product tells just the same tale. Built on a bucolic Punjabi milieu and characters the movie moves through some gorgeous locales of the Farao land, Egypt and the awesome Australia. But the life-line of Singh is Kinnge keeps going on its silly-comic plot as well as a string of side-splitting scenes and dialogues. In addition, a pack of super-suit dramatis persona keeps hold of the laughter-line at its best and makes this light movie worth heavy compliment.

The storyline - fun takes the entire room

Singh is King is about Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar), a young Punjabi benevolent whose magnanimity acts upon the villagers on the other way round all the time ......things always go bad to worse when Happy lends a helping hand! Sick of Happy's generosity the villagers desperately plan to send him on a long tour to give peace a chance in the village.....at least for some time. They cajole him to bring back Lucky Singh (Sonu Sood), a Punjabi underworld Don in Australia whose villainy was foiling their image there; and Lucky's parents were also not being able to live without him. Happy Singh heartily moves ahead with his best pal Rangeela (Om Puri) and, by mistake, reaches Egypt in place of Australia.

As interesting as the mistake, Happy meets Sonia (Katrina Kaif) here in Egypt in falls in love straight away. Next, when Happy and Rangeela reaches Australia they are penniless and so starve for days before Happy Happen upon Rose Lady (Kirron Kher) who gives them food and lodging. Survived, Happy now marches on his enterprise to find Lucky. When Happy locates Lucky, he is found to be out of order from an attack by other gang and cannot speak a word. This leading to a series of uncertainty and dispute finally crowns Happy Singh as the King (or King?) of the dangerous underworld gang. In Australia as well the Don Happy Singh makes his way through a lot of comical errors and misadventures. But, the twist of the climax comes when Sonia returns to Australia with the boyfriend (Ranvir Shorey) ...... and to add more, she turns out to be Rose Lady's daughter. The rest of the film brings hoard of fun from the triangular love routine and the spices of bolly-movies.

The impressive cast gives reason for the applaud

Now, as far as the performance of the artistes is concerned, everyone comes up to the expectation. Akshay Kumar poured his heart and soul into the character of Happy Singh to put it at the heart of the movie. All the way through the film, Akshay rocked the silver screen with his comic acting and you'd find no saturation point in his energy and timing throughout the movie. Katrina looks gorgeously pretty in those breathtaking dresses and her vibrant smile finds a lovely effect on the audience. She dubs her own lines as well in this movie and as these were in English in most of the scenes, they are pretty lucid on the ears. About Om Puri and Kirran Kher....as usually, prodigious....particularly Om Puri as Akshay's reluctant tour-mate. Neha Dhupia looks hot and makes the audience feel her presence in some of the best scenes. Both Sonu Sood and Ranvir Shorey show their sign of improvement. And last (but never the least) all the spotlights of Singh is King go over the splendid Javed Jaffery, especially in the pre-climax of the movie. But among all, it's an Akshay Kumar film and........Akshay rocks in Singh is King!

Its music - adds cream to the laughter cake

The music and the cinematography of Singh is Kinnge are of first-rate. Pritam has already carved his niche among the audience of Bollywood and in this film satisfies his fans fully. The title track, Bhootni ke, Jee Karda are the real good ones and Teri ore goes soothing. And the superlative camera work by Sanjay Gupta and Ben Nott is worth a big compliment.

The little loopholes

Once the audience gets into the laughter-ride of Singh is Kinnge, they wouldn't usually look for any loopholes (there isn't any serious ones, in fact!).....yet, a better carved second half would leave the critics grudge-free. Besides, people really would love to watch more of the superb comic-chemistry of Happy and Tony. The climax and the denouement seem to be a bit abruptly put up. And, at times, the pure Punjabi dialogues were little less than intelligible as well.

The producer Vipul Amruthlal has spent over RPS 50 million solely on the promotion of the film. With huge investment, big casts, beautifully picturised songs, young & attractive Akshay-kat and most of all...with great hilarity.......Singh is King lives up to its pricey hype. The much-looked-for Singh is King is sure to cut a big notch in the box office.
