Singh is King

movie review Singh is KingEven the rhythm in the title - sing(h) is king - gives the impression that it won't be taxing your grey matter to take a laughter-spree ride. Singh is King is a typical bolly-comic film stuffed purely with guffaw and entertainment. The director Anees Bazmee has hit the box office for years with laughter-laden movies like No Entry and Welcome and his latest immensely-mass-catering product tells just the same tale. Built on a bucolic Punjabi milieu and characters the movie moves through some gorgeous locales of the Farao land, Egypt and the awesome Australia. But the life-line of Singh is Kinnge keeps going on its silly-comic plot as well as a string of side-splitting scenes and dialogues. In addition, a pack of super-suit dramatis persona keeps hold of the laughter-line at its best and makes this light movie worth heavy compliment.

The storyline - fun takes the entire room

Singh is King is about Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar), a young Punjabi benevolent whose magnanimity acts upon the villagers on the other way round all the time ......things always go bad to worse when Happy lends a helping hand! Sick of Happy's generosity the villagers desperately plan to send him on a long tour to give peace a chance in the village.....at least for some time. They cajole him to bring back Lucky Singh (Sonu Sood), a Punjabi underworld Don in Australia whose villainy was foiling their image there; and Lucky's parents were also not being able to live without him. Happy Singh heartily moves ahead with his best pal Rangeela (Om Puri) and, by mistake, reaches Egypt in place of Australia.

As interesting as the mistake, Happy meets Sonia (Katrina Kaif) here in Egypt in falls in love straight away. Next, when Happy and Rangeela reaches Australia they are penniless and so starve for days before Happy Happen upon Rose Lady (Kirron Kher) who gives them food and lodging. Survived, Happy now marches on his enterprise to find Lucky. When Happy locates Lucky, he is found to be out of order from an attack by other gang and cannot speak a word. This leading to a series of uncertainty and dispute finally crowns Happy Singh as the King (or King?) of the dangerous underworld gang. In Australia as well the Don Happy Singh makes his way through a lot of comical errors and misadventures. But, the twist of the climax comes when Sonia returns to Australia with the boyfriend (Ranvir Shorey) ...... and to add more, she turns out to be Rose Lady's daughter. The rest of the film brings hoard of fun from the triangular love routine and the spices of bolly-movies.

The impressive cast gives reason for the applaud

Now, as far as the performance of the artistes is concerned, everyone comes up to the expectation. Akshay Kumar poured his heart and soul into the character of Happy Singh to put it at the heart of the movie. All the way through the film, Akshay rocked the silver screen with his comic acting and you'd find no saturation point in his energy and timing throughout the movie. Katrina looks gorgeously pretty in those breathtaking dresses and her vibrant smile finds a lovely effect on the audience. She dubs her own lines as well in this movie and as these were in English in most of the scenes, they are pretty lucid on the ears. About Om Puri and Kirran Kher....as usually, prodigious....particularly Om Puri as Akshay's reluctant tour-mate. Neha Dhupia looks hot and makes the audience feel her presence in some of the best scenes. Both Sonu Sood and Ranvir Shorey show their sign of improvement. And last (but never the least) all the spotlights of Singh is King go over the splendid Javed Jaffery, especially in the pre-climax of the movie. But among all, it's an Akshay Kumar film and........Akshay rocks in Singh is King!

Its music - adds cream to the laughter cake

The music and the cinematography of Singh is Kinnge are of first-rate. Pritam has already carved his niche among the audience of Bollywood and in this film satisfies his fans fully. The title track, Bhootni ke, Jee Karda are the real good ones and Teri ore goes soothing. And the superlative camera work by Sanjay Gupta and Ben Nott is worth a big compliment.

The little loopholes

Once the audience gets into the laughter-ride of Singh is Kinnge, they wouldn't usually look for any loopholes (there isn't any serious ones, in fact!).....yet, a better carved second half would leave the critics grudge-free. Besides, people really would love to watch more of the superb comic-chemistry of Happy and Tony. The climax and the denouement seem to be a bit abruptly put up. And, at times, the pure Punjabi dialogues were little less than intelligible as well.

The producer Vipul Amruthlal has spent over RPS 50 million solely on the promotion of the film. With huge investment, big casts, beautifully picturised songs, young & attractive Akshay-kat and most of all...with great hilarity.......Singh is King lives up to its pricey hype. The much-looked-for Singh is King is sure to cut a big notch in the box office.
